Selected from 272 nominees, City Tech received the Wintrust Chicago Neighborhood Award in recognition of the Chicago Health Atlas.
In May 2021, the Chicago Health Atlas moved from its home at City Tech Collaborative to the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health, which will further extend the Chicago Health Atlas’ reach and impact.

Building on the Chicago Health Atlas’ existing resources, City Tech has launched a new COVID-19 page that includes links to the latest COVID-19 data and testing locations, data on underlying conditions tied to the virus, and a map of essential businesses by zip code using HERE Technologies data.
During this time of uncertainty, the Chicago Health Atlas serves as a data resource to those analyzing and combating COVID-19; with data sets and street-level resource maps on various health and wellness indicators, the Atlas can help community organizations understand problems pressing their neighborhoods and enable dynamic programming responses.
On February 19, 2020, City Tech hosted a roundtable discussion with thought leaders and Chicago Health Atlas end users. Those who joined “Chicago Health Atlas Roundtable: Maximizing Health and Wellness Outcomes through a Community Analytics Tool” helped us evaluate the usefulness of an automated analytics tool to support organizations as they seek to serve their constituents, create philanthropic opportunities, and use data to better understand population health.
The Chicago Health Atlas now has three new data sets as heat maps available by community area. Users can now explore: Available Affordable Housing Units, Grocery Store Density, and Department of Family and Support Services.
The Atlas provides public maps and data to understand the interaction of social and environmental factors and health outcomes. Air quality data is the latest addition to other physical environment indicators; the Atlas also provides users the option to explore other indicator sets such as demography, clinical care, social and economic factors, health behaviors, mortality, and morbidity
The advancement of web technology in recent years has resulted in the development of a number of powerful tools to help understand complex, interrelated phenomena. These tools can be effective in showing the interaction of social and environmental factors with health outcomes.
