City Tech Receives a $300K Sprague Institute Grant

Leslie Durr • Jan 14, 2019

City Tech Collaborative is pleased to announce it has received $300,000 from the Otho S.A. Sprague Memorial Institute for continued enhancement of the Chicago Health Atlas. The Chicago Health Atlas is a website developed in 2012 by the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Smart Chicago Collaborative to allow Chicago residents and public health stakeholders to easily search, analyze, and download health data for the city of Chicago.  The Chicago Health Atlas has been funded by the Otho S. A. Sprague Memorial Institute since its inception, and has been the key conceptual partner along with the Chicago Health Atlas Advisory Committee in determining how the site is developed through time.

“We are pleased to continue our partnership with the Sprague Institute in developing this valuable tool for Chicago. Our hope is that you will use this data to both better understand health in Chicago and identify opportunities to improve health and well-being .”

-Brenna Berman, Executive Director, City Tech Collaborative

With data from more than 30 sources, users can explore the health outcomes, behaviors and characteristics of their neighborhoods and the entire city of Chicago.  The Atlas includes street-level maps of resources (grocery stores, schools, clinics, housing services, etc.) for 55 community areas provided by MAPSCorps. Data contained in the Chicago Health Atlas can be downloaded and all charts, maps and tables can be printed for use in grant applications, community meetings and other presentations. Users can also track the progress being made under the citywide plan to promote health equity, Healthy Chicago 2.0.

The Chicago Health Atlas is an ever-improving tool. Through new partnerships, additional data and continuous updates to the site, we will be better equipped to understand and improve our city's health. In 2019, look for the addition of expanded health and social determinants of health datasets to be added to the Atlas. The addition of these datasets will create a more comprehensive snapshot of health by community area. For more information regarding the Health Atlas email Leslie.Durr@UILABS.org
