From HERE Technologies ' Rethinking the curb: 6 visionaries on how to harmonize this crowded space , an eBook featuring insight about the future of curbs:

As ride-hailing, e-commerce and food delivery services continue to grow, the value of curbside space is increasingly apparent. Though valuable and potentially lucrative, its original design is failing to live up to the needs of today's society. The demand for curbside space is growing, but the asset itself is fixed.

To reduce urban congestion, ensure optimal roadway performance management, encourage new mobility solutions and facilitate on-demand delivery efficiency, it is vital that the curb be better utilized.

David Leopold , Director of City Solutions at City Tech, was featured as one of six visionaries and thought leaders in urban mobility. David shared insight on how to better optimize curbside space:

“With open conversations, data-sharing and a dynamic, forward-looking approach, the curb can rise to meet the growing demands of the community," said David. “Curbs do not exist in a vacuum. In fact, they are a reflection of the built environment around them, and their uses are as abundant as the latest mobility trends. As the macro shifts in the transportation industry are becoming more dynamic, we are coming to realize just how instrumental this fixed asset is when it comes to efficient mobility. It is vital for cities to have a conversation about the relative value of the curb’s many diverse uses, weighing the individual benefits (i.e. private vehicle parking) versus the shared benefits (i.e. bus stops) and identifying a symbiotic relationship between the two. Sharing data between the public and private sectors is one of the best ways to conduct a forward-looking conversation to identify and implement lasting solutions. I think companies have an opportunity to share with the public sector how their technologies are evolving in a way that can create operational efficiencies and transparency to achieve a mutual win-win: improving their own services and developing a smoother running operational environment. With open conversations, data-sharing, and a dynamic, forward-looking approach, the curb can rise to meet the growing demands of the community."
