Curbside Management

Case Study: Curbside Management

The space between city sidewalks and streets has become a battle ground for the future of urban mobility. Traditional uses of curb space in cities – including buses, taxis, freight deliveries, bike lanes and parking –now compete with rideshare, same-day deliveries, dockless vehicles, and other new transportation modes and services.

Together with Bosch, HERE Technologies, Stantec, Teralytics, SpotHero, and CarrierDirect, City Tech developed the Curbside Management Solution to create a scalable model to enable coordinated, dynamic curbside operations. Combining new data on curb demand and economic value with emerging technology and pricing models, the team was able to understand just how much curb space is allocated to different users and how to best optimize space to clear up the chaos – thus transforming this inert infrastructure into dynamic and valuable nodes in our urban transportation systems.

The solution will help cities understand, allocate, and manage curbside space more effectively by providing market-driven access to those who depend on it – thus relieving curbside pressure, creating efficiencies for users, and improving resident safety. At the same time, the model can inform local officials on how to better implement curbside pricing and payment systems to balance economic goals, public needs, and public policy priorities like equity and environmental quality.
